Google has thrown down the gauntlet in the AI chatbot arena with the release of its latest beta test, Bard. Touted as an “early experiment” by Google, registration for the generative AI’s waitlist began Tuesday morning. And so far restricted to United States and the UK, with more countries said to follow.

Built on the company’s in-house artificial intelligence software, known as Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA). Meaning Bard is similar to other chatbots of its kind; Using a vast amount of data collected to predict how to respond to human queries. However, unlike Bing Chat or ChatGPT, Bard does not rely on external search results to provide information to users. Instead, it generates responses using its own language model.

Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft are all vying for dominance in the unexplored territory of AI-powered chatbots. The competition between these tech giants highlights the increasing importance of chatbots in digital marketing and customer service. As well as their potential impact on the internet as a whole.

Cool, how so though?

With Bard’s launch, Google is positioning itself to be a major player in this rapidly evolving field. Sort of.

Bard differs from ChatGPT in that it is not proficient in generating computer code. Additionally, Google has imposed limitations on Bard’s memory of past chat exchanges. And is not currently using the AI tool for advertising purposes.

Alongside these limitations, concerns about Bard’s accuracy persist. During a recent demonstration, Google warned users that the chatbot “will not always get it right.” Citing a promotional video in which Bard provided an incorrect answer that contributed to a $100 billion decrease in Alphabet’s market value.

Competition between tech giants heat up in the AI chatbot space, the potential impact of these tools on various industries, remains significant. While Bard may still have room for improvement, Google’s entry into the chatbot market represents an important step forward in the ongoing evolution of AI-powered tools.

But for now, keep an eye on your inbox for an invitation to try out Bard.
